To register a nickname in IRC so no one can use it except you, follow these steps:
Think of a unique nickname. Use the /NICK command in IRC chat to change it. If someone else has the nickname registered, you receive a message from IRC asking you to change it to something else or to identify yourself with a password. If you don't get this message, you should be able to register this nickname.
Register the nickname. Type the following in IRC chat to register your nickname:
Replace password with the password you want to use and supply your own email address. You will be sent an email notification to complete registering your new nickname.
Use your password in your IRC client software. Supply your nickname and password when you log in the next time. Now no one will be able to steal your nickname and we will be able to identify each other.
Optional identification. The nickserv on IRC may ask you to identify yourself. You can do this manually by typing in the following:
